Out of nowhere Ubisoft has announced the February 4 release of new PC platformer Grow Home, described as a quirky, experimental climbing game from Driver: San Francisco developer Ubisoft Reflections.
Taking on the role of BUD (Botanical Utility Droid), an excitable, child-like robot sent on a mission to search the galaxy for a new species of plant that can oxygenate his home world, players will explore the strange, open world full of floating islands, caves and waterfalls, created in a minimalist artistic style.
“By growing and directing the giant Star Plant into a towering organic sculpture, players reshape the planet and create a magnificent landscape that lets them climb to new heights,” explains Ubisoft. “The game’s unique climbing controls and abilities challenge players to continually reach for higher ground, but one wrong move and it’s a long way down.”
The game began as an experiment by a small team of 8 within Ubisoft Reflections. But despite only coming to PC, Ubisoft says the game is best played using a gamepad.
“We’ve mapped the hand controls to the left and right triggers and this gives a very physical connection to the grabbing and the climbing,” says Producer Pete Young. “It really elevates the experience.”
Perhaps if the game does well on PC a console port will come in the future.
