UPDATE: Sony has officially announced Gran Turismo 6 and confirmed a Christmas release date. For the first official details, screens and a look at the first ever trailer, head through here.

ORIGINAL STORY: Gran Turismo 6 will release on PlayStation 3 this Christmas, according to multiple online reports.

Both iafrica and el33tonline claim to have received information about the unannounced title, which is alleged to have been formally revealed at a media event earlier today.

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” series creator Kazunori Yamauchi reportedly told el33tonline (via Polygon). “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We’re pleased to deliver Gran Turismo 6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform.”

“However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments,” he continued.

“I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for Gran Turismo 6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo.”

A press release allegedly obtained by iafrica claims that the racer will feature all the cars and tracks from 2010’s Gran Turismo 5, along with additional historic cars, road cars and race cars, bringing the total vehicle count to 1200. Additional cars will be added via DLC.

Gran Turismo 6 will also contain seven new locations, it’s alleged, including Silverstone, bringing the total track count to 33. Of that, 71 different layouts will be available.

The game is also said to be built on a “new compact game engine”, and will be able to connect with smartphones and tablets for “social and community functions”, the site claims.

A November release for Gran Turismo 6 has long been rumoured after the game was outed by Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny back in February. Listings for the game later appeared on numerous European retailers, before a placeholder page was pinned on Gran Turismo’s official website overnight.

Tweets by members of the media following the leak appear to have further validated the legitimacy of the alleged press release.

El33tonline suggests that information on Gran Turismo 6 will be officially released at 5pm BST.
