God of War director Cory Barlog has confirmed that developer Sony Santa Monica Studio is doing something a little different with the game’s hardest difficulty setting.

As reported by Rolling Stone, Sony’s epic dad-’em-up will feature a unique fourth difficulty setting that offers more than just the usual enemies-are-slightly-tougher-to-defeat-and-you’re-a-lot-weaker shenanigans that most games pull. Nope, this time around the developer has created something more unique; so much so that it requires its own separate save slot and can’t be altered once you begin.

‘We did a ton of stuff to make it a genuine challenge, not a cynical increase. Enemies are all changed up. We changed the attack patterns of things; it’s hugely different,’ said Barlog, who sadly didn’t go into anymore details on the subject. However, he did confirm there’s a new Story Mode that sounds like it eschews most (if not all) combat from the equation.

Barlog also recently suggested that future God of War games will keep both the Norse mythology setting and Kratos’ son Atreus, although was quick to point out that nothing has been set in stone yet.

God of War is due out exclusively for PS4 on April 20.
