God of War franchise sales are more than 21.5 million copies

Sony’s God of War franchise has notched up worldwide sales of 21.65 million copies, Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed.

The figure is comprised of seven games, beginning with God of War on PS2 in 2005 and ending with God of War: Origins on PSP in 2011.

God of War 3 has sold the highest number at 5.2 million copies, followed by the first game (4.6 million) and then God of War 2 (4.2 million).

The God of War HD Collection has racked up an impressive 2.4 million copies sold and downloaded.

On PSP, Chains of Olympus proved to be hugely more popular than the handheld follow-ups, managing sales of 3.25 million. Ghost of Sparta added 1.2 million copies and Origins just 711,000 copies.

The next title in the franchise, God of War: Ascension, has been confirmed for release on March 12, 2013.
