A God of War reboot was never on the cards for developer Sony Santa Monica Studio, its director has revealed.

Speaking with PlayStation LifeStyle, Cory Barlog revealed that the team never really considered bringing in a fresh protagonist for the PlayStation-exclusive franchise, suggesting that doing so would dismiss a decade’s worth of character development for angry anti-hero, Kratos.

‘It’s like the first games serve as the backstory, right? And it’s like people say, “Oh, why didn’t you start over and bring a new character?” And I was like, but it’s like a decade of character development. You can’t. Why would you ever throw that away? Like why wouldn’t you want to see what it’s like,’ he said.

That’s not to say that God of War hasn’t had a bit of a shakeup for its PlayStation 4 debut. Kratos is older, probably a bit more wiser, grown a beard, and more importantly, is accompanied by his son Atreus. The camera has also been revamped (a feature Barlog had pitched to the Tomb Raider team during his time at Crystal Dynamics), but there’s still a sense of familiarity about it all.

‘The pace is a little bit slower, but still in the heat of the moment, God of War was felt in those combat experiences. I think that’s hard to do, but I hope we’ve achieved it,’ explained Barlog.

God of War is due out on April 20, but until then be sure to read Alice’s thoughts on the game to get an idea of how it’s shaping up.
