In a recent Hollywood Reporter interview, it was revealed that Christopher Judge nabbed the role of Kratos because of the rapport he displayed with co-star Sunny Suljic in the audition process, but creative director Cory Barlog emphatically added that the PS4 exclusive isn’t an escort mission.
Suljic was cast as Kratos’ son, Atreus, before the role of God of War was filled. ‘There was an audition and they asked me who I liked most,’ Suljic stated, proving the studio took his opinion into account while deciding who should play the big man.
“We did a chemistry test, and I didn’t find out until later that they really did ask Sunny for approval,’ Judge recalled while speaking to Hollywood Reporter. But Barlog was adamant that players won’t be forced to focus on keeping Suljic safe for the duration of the game.
‘It’s most definitely not an escort mission,’ Barlog told the interviewer. ‘The player has direct command over Atreus and is trying to guide him through the process, but the kid has his own mind and he is able to handle himself even when you’re not paying attention.’ With the press of a button, you can tell Kratos’ son to perform certain tasks which Barlog likens to ‘teaching your kid to ride a bike as you run alongside.’
God of War is scheduled to launch early 2018 on PlayStation 4.
