Sony Santa Monica has been dead silent since the release of God of War: Ragnarok. While the studio is reportedly working on a new spin-off Metroidvania, there’s also another major PlayStation exclusive title in the works.

According to well-trusted games journalist Jason Schreier, the studio’s next major project is so interesting that it will “feel” like a brand-new franchise. However, that new game is likely another God of War.

Sony Santa Monica’s next game is more than just another God of War

Speaking on the gaming-themed social media forum ResetEra, Schreier explained that the studio’s “next big thing” is currently deep in development, isn’t a sci-fi game and will not be a new IP, despite feeling like one.

“I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one,” the journalist explained. “Maybe that’s why people are confused. Please don’t ask me more questions about this – if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it’ll be in an article, not on a forum.”

The reporter explained that the “sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now is nonsense”, but didn’t confirm whether the game will be another title in the God of War series. However, considering the studio’s history and the ending of the last game’s Valhalla DLC, it likely will be.

While unconfirmed, the next entry in the God of War series is expected to bring Kratos into a brand-new era of mythology. Just like how the Norse trilogy was a different genre to the Greek games, the rumoured Egyptian setting could be a brand-new take on the action series.

At the time of writing, it’s been three years since the release of Ragnarok, and that game took just four years to release after the studio’s series reboot in 2018. If the studio continues to push out games at the same pace as before, a new game is likely coming sometime next year.
