Nintendo has today rolled-out a new Wii update introducing functionality which makes it possible for Wii users to send a virtual gift to friends. It works in a similar way to making a normal purchase from the Wii Shop Channel: choose the software title, select ‘Gift’ and then choose a friend from your list to send it to.
This isn’t a free service, with the cost of the software being deducted from your Wii Points total. There’s also no need to ruin the surprise gift by checking what games your friend already has; your Wii will tell if your friend already owns the game you’re trying to send.
Nintendo has also released Pokémon Snap on the Virtual Console. The N64 Pokémon-based photography title is available for 1,000 Wii Points and sees players travelling around Pokémon Island taking photos of various different Pokémon. The game is the first Virtual Console release to feature all-new features over the original release, with the ability to send Pokémon pictures to friends via the Wii Message Board.
The new Wii content just keeps on coming today, with a new update for the Wii Photo Channel available in the Wii Software Channel. This is an optional update that allows users to customise the Photo Channel icon on the Wii Menu with any photo from their collection. The background music functionality also sees a change, dropping MP3 support in favour of the higher quality AAC format. If you want to keep MP3 functionality you should stay clear of this Photo Channel update.
