Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for release on April 7, 2017, Legendary and Universal have announced.
Pacific Rim was the film gamers were going to love thanks to its flashy visuals and focus on giant robots fighting massive monsters. Many did, but not enough to make the movie a major money maker for Legendary and Warner, scraping past $100 million at the US box office.
Thankfully, the monster pic with production budget to match ($190 million), managed an international haul of $310 thanks largely to China. This it seems, along with the passion of director Guillermo del Toro, has been enough to greenlight a sequel.
Zak Penn and del Toro will write the script. It’s not clear if any of the first film’s cast – Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Robert Kazinsky – will return.
“The characters I love will return,” del Toro told BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
Del Toro also released a message to fans on YouTube.
