Friday the 13th The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds studio Illfonic has finally formally revealed Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

This new asymmetrical multiplayer game sees you take on the role of a Ghostbuster or the ghosts. You’ll strap on a proton pack and use a range of gadgets to trap and capture ghosts in a range of locations. Illfonic are touting the game as a more all-ages take on their previous horror-movie themed outings.

However, you won’t be playing as one of the four iconic members of the original team. Instead, it seems Winston is now in some sort of managerial role while Ray runs an occult store. You’ll be able to head to the series’ iconic firehouse in-between missions, to load up, customise your character and get intel on the ghouls you’ll come up against. As Ernie Hudson himself previously let slip, he and Dan Ackroyd are reprising their roles for the game.

Alternatively, you can play as one of the ghosts. The trailer only shows us a couple of these so far, with one new character and series mascot Slimer. Naturally, the ghosts will have their own powers, including the ability to pass through walls and terrorise NPC citizens. Of course, you can customise your Ghostbuster and your Ghost as you see fit. You’ll also be able to unlock new customisations for both ghosts and Ghostbusters as you play.

Canon-wise, Illfonic say the game will be set after every movie in the series so far, including most recent entry Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Expect plenty of nods and easter eggs. Cross-platform play is also supported between PC and console, to ensure you’ll get in games quickly.

Expect Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to haunt Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in Q4 2022.
