While the replacement of Jin has been controversial for some, the Ghost of Yotei star has reflected on their casting as “dauting” and the “completion of a dream”. The release date for Ghost of Yotei is October 2nd, and the game has received glowing reviews. Yotei has surpassed Tsushima judging by Metacritic, and even former PlayStation President, Shuhei Yoshida, said Ghost of Yotei was “even better” than Tsushima after getting his hands on the sequel. The most controversial change from Tsushima has been the replacement of Jin because he was such an excellent protagonist, but Yotei’s Atsu is equally profound, so fans will love her just as much if not more.
Ghost of Yotei was the “completion of a dream”
Ghost of Yotei’s Atsu is a phenomenal protagonist spearheaded by the excellent performance of Erika Ishii. Recently, Erika participated in a media roundtable interview attended by Ungeek, and they spoke about preparing for the role and how it felt being cast as the new face of the Ghost series.
Asked whether there was any pressure replacing Jin as a protagonist because of how beloved he is within the PlayStation community, Erika said that being cast as the new lead in Ghost of Yotei “was a very momentous occasion”. Erika said, “I’ve always been a huge fan of Sony games, and so stepping onto the Sony soundstage felt like the completion of a dream I had achieved”.
The Ghost of Yotei star admitted that replacing Jin as the series lead “felt so daunting” at first, however, “it’s funny how quickly the human brain adjusts” and soon Erika “was just joking around with a lot of the crew, and it felt like home”.
As for what makes Atsu so special compared to other characters Erika has played, the performer said they “have never played a character that has my face and is me, and that I’ve gotten to truly build from the ground up, including the way she moves and her speech patterns”.
Elsewhere in the interview, Erika revealed inspirations for their performance as Atsu. These inspirations range from “Kurosawa films and jidaigeki” to Kill Bill” and even anime like “Samurai Champloo”. Erika was even inspired by “Toshiro Mifune’s performances, and Clint Eastwood as The Man with No Name”.
In our Ghost of Yotei review, we heavily praised Erika’s performance as Atsu, highlighting it as one of the best aspects of the game alongside the beautiful scenery, stunning vistas, and tremendous gameplay. Jin was an excellent protagonist in Ghost of Tsushima, but his story was complete, and it made sense to move onto a new star for Ghost of Yotei. And, as great as Atsu is, fans can expect a new face again in the next installment as Sucker Punch has teased exploring different time periods and settings, albeit with some boundaries that can’t be crossed.
