Ghost of Tsushima 2 is here, albeit with a new protagonist, setting and name. Dubbed Ghost of Yotei, the new Sucker Punch adventure is an awesome-looking new PS5 exclusive releasing in 2025.

Ghost of Yotei announced

Revealed alongside new Astro Bot DLC and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Ghost of Yotei is an all-new adventure from developer Sucker Punch. Set in 1603, players will play as a new ghost named Atsu who sets out on a journey surrounding the beautiful Mount Totei.

Just like its predecessor, the new Samurai-themed open-world game is a stunning title with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras and an unforgettable style. While not much of the game has been shown in its three minute reveal trailer, it appears to be a fairly traditional successor to Ghost of Tsushima.

While some fans may be disappointed at the absence of protagonist Jin Sakai in favour of a new story in a new location, it is still a very exciting title. After all, with Ghost of Tsushima and its expansion, Sakai’s story was wrapped up, and it should be time for a new samurai to take the lead.

Ghost of Yotei was, by far, the star of the most recent PlayStation State of Play and was the only brand-new exclusive to be revealed during the presentation. Of course, we’re not counting a new Horizon Zero Dawn re-release as a new remaster, don’t be silly.

300 years after the original

Set 300 years after the original, developer Sucker Punch revealed it wanted to do something “fresh” instead of developing a straightforward sequel.

“To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead,” the developer said. “At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

“While we aren’t diving into story specifics yet today, we can reveal that Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima,” they continued. “Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan… It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima.”

There’s still a lot to learn about the new Ghost of Tsushima successor, but considering Sucker Punch’s pedigree and the quality of the studio’s last game, we expect Yotei to be another brilliant open-world game with an unforgettable style.
