Ghost of Yotei is the brilliant sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, and Sucker Punch has teased continuing the series in different time periods and settings. The release date for Ghost of Yotei is October 2nd, and PlayStation gamers have another brilliant exclusive waiting for them to play. We praised the game’s beauty, style and gameplay in our review, and on Metacritic its critical reception has exceeded Ghost of Tsushima. It appears there will be more of the Ghost series in the future, and Sucker Punch has teased exploring more different time periods and settings belonging to Japan.

Ghost of Yotei dev teases different time periods and settings for future installments

Ungeek recently participated in a media roundtable interview with Sucker Punch studio head, Brian Fleming. As part of the media roundtable, Ungeek asked Fleming what defines a “Ghost” game.

Fleming explained that “the core of Ghost is someone wielding a katana”. The Sucker Punch head further stated that “the natural beauty of Japan is part of the essence of a Ghost game,” too. So, whenever we are treated to a “Ghost” game, “It will always have that core, open-world katana adventure of some kind”.

Lastly, Fleming said, “we may change time periods, we may explore different settings, but I think there are some boundaries we probably won’t cross.” As for what these boundaries are, Sucker Punch “can’t imagine a Ghost game set in, say, feudal Europe [as] That doesn’t make sense” and “There are plenty of games set there”.

Fleming’s response basically means Ghost will never turn into Assassin’s Creed. While Sucker Punch may continue to explore different time periods and settings, as they did with Tsushima set on Tsushima Island in 1274 and Yotei around Mount Yōtei of Hokkaido, Japan, in 1603, the series will never abandon the country of Japan. On the flip side, Assassin’s Creed explores different time periods, too, but it also changes countries with nearly every instalment such as going from Italy to France, Egypt, England, and, most recently, Japan.

We really enjoyed Ghost of Yotei and we cannot wait to see more of the series in the future. As for where we would love to see the franchise go next, there are numerous periods from Japanese history Sucker Punch could explore, but a good one would perhaps be during the Boshin War, also known as the Japanese revolution or Civil War, between 1868 and 1869.
