The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley has said that he was left broken hearted when he found out Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima was not being allowed to attend his show earlier this month.

MGS 5 won best Action/Adventure game, but the award had to be accepted by Keifer Sutherland because Kojima wasn’t in attendance.

“As you noticed, Hideo Kojima is not here with us tonight and I wanted to tell you a little bit about that,” Keighley told the audience. “Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s award ceremony to accept any awards.”

In a recent Reddit AMA Keighley has explained why he spoke out.

“It just broke my heart that he couldn’t be with us – something had to be said. I didn’t tell anyone on the show team what I was going to say and it wasn’t rehearsed,” said Keighley.

He added it was a “heartbreaking situation”.
