A Gears of War movie is now in pre-production with Universal Studios, Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson revealed during a livestream which took place yesterday.

The film will be produced by Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films, who between them have credits which include Ted, Central Intelligence, the Planet of the Apes franchise and Oblivion.

Fergusson didn’t offer any information on specifics such as a release date, director, writer or cast.

There is, however, a
plan to make the best Gears of War movie, not a feature film which attempts to retell the complete story of the games.

“When you do a movie like this, you have to … realize that it’s a
different medium with a different audience,” Fergusson said. “I think if you were to go in and say, like, ‘OK, it’s got to be completely 100 percent faithful to the game canon,’ or the story of the game, like, what’s going to end up happening is … it’s not going to be the best movie. The big thing we’re really trying to focus on is making the best Gears movie possible, as opposed to the one that’s the most closest to the game…

“I want it to be this thing where it feels authentic to Gears of War, but I want it to, like, blow people’s minds because it’s actually a
great movie first, and then it pays homage to the source material second.”

I’m pretty sure we’ve heard this kind of talk before about video game to film adaptations, but let’s hope all those involved get it right.

This is the second attempt to bring the Gears of War franchise to the big screen, with a
project announced back in 2007 between Epic and New Line. Things appeared to be moving along well, with Stuart Bettie (Collateral) attached to write the screenplay, and Underworld’s Len Wiseman set to direct.

However in In 2010 Wiseman left the production and the film’s reported $100 budget was slashed. The project then collapsed.

Gears of War 4 launches next week. We’ve been playing through the game and you can read Tom’s thoughts on the campaign right here.
