Gears of War 3 writer Karen Traviss won’t be working on Gears of War: Judgment.

Instead two other authors will take her place; Tom Bissell, writer of the excellent Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, and Rob Auten, who has worked as a consultant for 20th Century Fox.

Other than penning the script for Gears of War itself, Traviss has also been responsible for much of the series’ extended fiction: 2008’s Aspho Fields, 2009’s Jacinto’s Remnant, 2010’s Anvil Gate, issues 15-24 of the Gears of War comic series between 2010 and 2012, 2011’s Coalition’s End and the recently released The Slab.

Dead Space producer Chuck Beaver recently said Gears’ narrative “contains atrocious, offensive violations of story basics. Yet it doesn’t seem to ruin it for many, many people. It’s literally the worst writing in games, but seems to have no ill effects.” Afterwards he also said he was misquoted and that he was a “huge fan” of Epic’s popular third-person shooter.

Will Bissel and Auten get the Beaver seal of approval?

Bissell and Auten will join Cliff Bleszinski and Fred ‘Baird’ Tatasciore at a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 13.

Gears of War: Judgment, a prequel title being developed by Bulletstorm studio People Can Fly, will be released in early 2013.
