Increasingly commonplace efforts by publishers to generate income from pre-owned games by issuing online access codes with new releases hasn’t damaged GAME’s pre-owned business, CEO Ian Shepherd has told MCV.

This year has seen a host of high profile releases launch with one-time use codes to activate online access for the game or to provide access to extra content. Gamers picking up these titles pre-owned are offered the option to purchase this content.

However, despite much negativity directed at the new practice, leading video games retailer GAME doesn’t believe its pre-owned segment has been damaged.

“Certainly, publishers are using content to extend the life of games to extend the reasons to keep them – that’s a good thing, as it’s good for us and we’ll sell more of the games,” said GAME CEO Ian Shepherd.

He added: “No we’ve not seen the changes in the commercial nature of how some games have launched make any impact on the trade-in category. It’s still a strong part of our business.”
