Video games retailer GAME has managed to win back some of its market share from supermarkets, according to Kantar Worldpanel data provided to MCV.
For the 12 week period ending July 6 2014, GAME saw its share of physical games, movies and music increase 1.1 percent year-on-year. Amazon boasts 21.8 percent of the entertainment market, with GAME up to 7.1 percent.
Looking only at games, Amazon and GAME combine to account for 52 percent of the physical market in the UK.
Supermarkets have suffered, with almost 1 million fewer buyers of entertainment products in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons combined.
Much of GAME’s success has been attributed to the new generation systems, in particular Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs.
“High street and online retailer, GAME, has performed particularly well thanks to Gen 4 games, especially the industry’s highest value release, Watchdogs, taking over a quarter of all sales to date,” explained strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel.
