Codemasters has today announced the 2009 release of Asobo Studios’ FUEL, a multi-terrain racing game which promises to revolutionise the genre.

The game has been in development for over four years and utilises Asobo Studios’ proprietary engine to present players with a no-boundaries playfield that’s over 5,000 square miles in size. The go anywhere gameplay will see players racing across wildly different terrain and executing death-defying stunts as they race dozens of varied two and four-wheeled vehicles.

The game is set in an alternate present in which the earth has been ravaged by the effects of climate change. A new breed of racing junkie has taken to the wastelands, where they race their home-tuned vehicles against each other in an all-new extreme sport as they compete to win fuel supplies.

Players will travel to the tsunami-wrecked pacific coast through the Nevada wastelands, including the Grand Canyon, up treacherous snow-capped mountains, thick forests, arid deserts, abandoned lakeside resorts and much more.

These vastly differing environments will be brought to life with a dynamic weather system featuring a full day and night cycle, plus destructive tornadoes, sandstorms, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and blizzards requiring mid-race strategy changes.

“The technology Asobo Studios has developed to build FUEL is ground-breaking. To create a game on this unprecedented scale to this level of graphical quality, complete with all the dynamic weather effects, is a great achievement,” said Barry Jafrato, Senior Vice President of Brand, Codemasters. “FUEL had to be a special title for Codemasters to include in our racing portfolio and we believe that from both a gameplay and a technical perspective, FUEL compliments our long standing tradition of driving excellence.”

The game will also feature online play complete with hundreds of multiplayer challenges. Expect more details on this aspect of the title in the coming months.

We’ll be seeing the game at Games Convention later this week so look out for our impressions soon.
