Duke Nukem’s co-creator George Broussard has called investment in free-to-play a “waste of time for uber [publishers] like EA”, and suggested that larger corporations are “chasing biz models” rather than “letting game design thrive”.

“f2p [free-to-play] is generally going to be a waste of time for uber pubs like EA,” said Broussard on Twitter. “Chasing biz models vs letting game design thrive.”

“Well crap, investors expect us to embrace f2p,” he continued. “We have any old ip just sitting around? Ultima? C&C? Ship it!”

Broussard’s comments follow last week’s revelation that EA’s upcoming RTS Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be a free-to-play title.

“Imagine if Blizzard did that to Starcraft?” he added.

Earlier this month, EA announced that struggling MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic would be transitioning to a free-to-play model later in the year.

The game will let users buy virtual items using an in-game currency.

Earlier today, VideoGamer.com reported that Dean Hall had considered turning DayZ into a free-to-play title, before opting for Notch’s successful ‘Minecraft model’.
