Fortnite players waking up on Christmas morning were greeted with a nice surprise. In a secret update that wasn’t fully detailed in the patch notes, Epic Games has covered the entire Fortnite OG map in snow for exactly 24 hours.
If you logged in today, December 25, you likely noticed that the greenery of the Fortnite island has been completely replaced by a snow biome. However, this is just a temporary change, and Epic will revert the original island after a day.
The White Christmas in Fortnite
Long-time fans of Fortnite have likely recognized the latest map change. This isn’t the first time that the island has frozen over, and it’s a nod to Ice Storm, a live event from Chapter 1 – Season 7. This was one of the most memorable events, as it had a huge impact on the island.
Back in January 2019, the Ice King emerged from his sphere above Polar Peak in a massive live event. He cast a spell that summoned a blizzard, covering the entire map in snow just like we are seeing today. However, that event came with a chaotic twist: The Ice Legion.
During the original event, hordes of zombies appeared on the map, which destroyed structures and attacked players. Fighting against them was more challenging due to the low visibility during the snowstorm, which was a fun twist.
The full snow coverage on the OG map is expected to melt away by tomorrow morning, returning the map to its standard state. Thankfully for snow fans, the original map has a snow biome, which will stay in the game for a few more months.
If you haven’t dropped from the Battle Bus yet today, make sure to get a few games in before the snow melts. It is a rare opportunity to see the classic map in its most festive form! Also, make sure to open Winterfest gifts before they expire.
