A surprising reveal has hit the Fortnite community as Kai Cenat confirmed that his Icon Series skin has been in the works for much longer than fans expected. Now that it has finally been released, the full story shows how long Epic has been preparing for this moment.
On a recent stream, Cenat opened up about the development process, explaining how early work began on his skin. The reveal gives fans a rare look behind the scenes of one of the most anticipated Fortnite drops of the year.
How long does a Fortnite skin take to release?
The popular streamer revealed that his skin had been in production for several months before players even knew it was coming. While he did not share the exact starting date, he revealed that the process started sometime in 2024, which shows that Epic Games and his team had been working on concepts and designs long before the official announcement.
“I’ve been in communication with Fortnite for about a year now to launch it,” Cenat said on his stream. “My s**t has been in the work since 2024. Literally, it takes a long time! They’ve got to scan your body, go over ideas, creatives. That’s the hardest part, like, telling them exactly what you want. You don’t want it to be corny or cheesy,” he added.
The content creator also revealed that Kanye West had to give Fortnite a green light to release The Tylil Dance emote, which was included in the bundle.
This development timeline explains why some prominent Fortnite creators haven’t received their Icon skins yet. Even Ninja, who was Fortnite’s biggest streamer in 2018, received his skin in 2020, two years after his peak. We can expect many other streamers and community members to get Icon skins in the future, but we may also have to wait for a few more years for some of them.
