When Fortnite first introduced Kicks, players mocked the idea of paying V-Bucks for virtual shoes. Fast forward less than a year, and those same accessories are among the hottest items in the game.
Recently, Epic Games released the most expensive shoes in Fortnite. Shortly after, these shoes became the best-selling item in the entire shop, outselling skins, emotes, and any other item. The price tag was considered outrageous once the shoes came out, but it turns out that this wasn’t a big deal.
The most expensive Fortnite shoes were also the most popular
This year, Epic has collaborated with MSCHF twice to bring new shoes to Fortnite. The first collaboration took place in August, resulting in Big Red Boot Kicks with a 1,200 V-Bucks price tag. The parties collaborated again recently, bringing another pair of shoes on Saturday, and once again, the price tag was the same.
The new shoes have the same design, and the only difference is the color. Due to this, players initially believed that they would be a style for the red shoes, but that didn’t happen. Fortnite released Black MSCHF shoes separately, and surprisingly, they were the best-selling item in the shop.
Kicks have been out for less than a year, and during this period, only a handful of them cost 1,200 V-Bucks. Most original shoes cost 600 V-Bucks, while collaborations are priced at 800 to 1,000. The MSCHF shoes broke that ceiling and still dominated the charts.
While the community was outraged at the price of the shoes, it appears that this wasn’t a big deal for many players. It’s very rare to see Kicks be the best-selling item in the shop, especially when they cost this much.
The success of the MSCHF Black Kicks proves that Fortnite’s cosmetic economy is more unpredictable than ever. What started as a controversial addition has evolved into one of the best moves by Epic, and it shows that players are willing to pay a premium for style, even with virtual items.
