Former SCE Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison, one of the most iconic figures in the history of PlayStation, is joining Microsoft as head of European Game Studios – the role left vacant by a departing Peter Molyneux.

Several sources have confirmed the appointment to GamesIndustry, and official word is expected later today.

Harrison watched over Sony’s first-party studios and was the go-to man for conferences – everyone remembers Lots of Ducks – and announcements of both PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet. He left Sony in 2008, before heading off to Atari and later joining Gaikai.

Could Harrison make his first public appearance for Microsoft at E3 2012? Perhaps unveiling a new platform?
