Movie production company Blumhouse has given a release date for the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, based on the immensely popular horror video game.

The movie will launch both in cinemas and also be available via streaming service Peacock in the US on the same day when it arrives, just in time for Halloween in the US on October 27, 2023. A UK date has yet to be confirmed.

Studio head Jason Blum first declared the news on his Twitter account, before it was further confirmed by the studio’s official Instagram alongside the first official photo from the upcoming movie. The post also detailed the film’s plot for fans – which will be as follows:

“The film follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.”

Starring in the movie will be The Hunger Games actor Josh Hutcherson in the role of Mike Schmidt, the security guard, while Scream villain (and Scooby Doo’s Shaggy) Matthew Lillard also taking on a role in the movie as a character known as William Afton.

The idea of a live-action Five Nights movie has been floating around for some time – with Warner Bros first picking up the rights all the way back in 2015. The project languished in development hell for a while, before being passed on to The Black Phone and M3GAN producers Blumhouse in 2017. However, due to a range of factors – including the departure of original director Chris Columbus and the global pandemic – meant production only really kicked into gear as late as last year.

The most recent game in the series was Five Nights at Freddy’s Security Breach, which arrived on PlayStation consoles and PC in 2021 before being brough over to Xbox around a year later.
