Fire Emblem: Three Houses update removes and changes Byleth’s male voice actor

Imogen Donovan Updated on by

The latest software update for Fire Emblem: Three Houses has replaced Byleth’s male voice actor, as well as included a new difficulty mode and new expansion pass content.

Voice actor Chris Niosi played the male protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and mobile spinoff Fire Emblem Heroes. In July, he published a Tumblr post that detailed he had been abusive toward colleagues, friends, and partner for over a decade. Additionally, Niosi revealed that he had violated a non-disclosure agreement about his role as Byleth in the Fire Emblem series to an ex-partner. At the time, Nintendo said, ‘After assessing the situation, we decided to re-record the character's voiceovers in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Heroes with another actor. The new voiceovers will be included in a future patch.’

This future patch has now arrived, and Niosi has been replaced by Zach Aguilar as the voice of Byleth. Aguilar is known for his work in anime series such as One Punch Man, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Hunter x Hunter. The update also offers expansion pass content, including a new set of items found in Byleth’s persona quarters. These are the Sacred Galewind Shoes, Sacred Floral Robe, Sacred Snowmelt Drop, and Sacred Moonstone.

Five new battles are available: Battle at Lake Teutates, Battle in the Forest, Battle at Gronder Field, Battle at the Sealed Forest, and Battle at Conand Tower. The battles will be identifiable with a yellow ‘!’, though they are dependent on save file progression. Corridor of the Tempest is a new song included with the update, and Byleth will receive a new attire and a new accessory.

And finally, the Maddening difficulty mode has been added, and upon completion, the Fire Emblem: Three Houses title screen will be altered to reflect the achievement. As for New Game +, the maximum amount of bonus Renown has risen to 50,000 points, and gives an extra 10,000 points when each path is through.

The 1.0.2 patch notes can be read in their entirety here. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
