Square Enix has confirmed that the Final Fantasy XV Prompto VR Experience from E3 2016 won’t be seeing the light of day after all, because it’s just a showcase demo. Originally teased at E3 2016 and announced that it’d be coming out for free, the experience gave players the opportunity to wear a PSVR headset and play as Prompto. Players would then be taken around the game’s world and defeat enemies in a simplistic shooting section. But that’s no longer the case.

Speaking to Sirus Gaming at the PlayStation Experience in South East Asia, Final Fantasy XV’s lead designer, Wan Hazmer, said that ‘The Prompto Shooting game was actually a showcase back then. It was just to showcase the power of the VR’. FFXV has already seen Prompto and Gladio-themed DLC since its release.

To satisfy the VR urges of FFXV fans, Square Enix has instead decided to go with the Monster of the Deep FFXV VR fishing spin-off which comes out in September. This will be a standalone release, which means it won’t require FFXV to play the game.
