Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that the MMO will arrive on the PlayStation 5 (via WccfTech).

The PlayStation 5 is backwards-compatible, sure, but the Final Fantasy franchise has never skipped the pomp and circumstance of a new announcement or a new lot of hardware doodads. Yoshida dropped the news during a Final Fantasy XIV fan meetup in London, UK.

Attendees were able to partake in a raffle to win a Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers PlayStation 4 that was signed by Yoshida. After the lucky winner walked away with the prize, Yoshida said that he hopes to throw in a Final Fantasy XIV-themed PlayStation 5 at the fan meet up in 2020. I’m certain a couple of question marks popped above the crowd’s heads, and Yoshida continued to formally reveal that the team is “hard at work on the PlayStation 5 version of Final Fantasy XIV.”

Dying Light 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Gods & Monsters are all also confirmed for PlayStation 5. Rumours abound that Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us: Part II, and Death Stranding will take advantage of the PS5’s special sauce, but that concrete line-up plus Final Fantasy XIV doesn’t look too shabby.

Final Fantasy XIV is out now on PC and PlayStation 4.
