A new Change.org petition has been created in the hope of convincing EA to include female footballers in its future FIFA games.

The petition seeks 20,000 supporters and will be sent to Brian Keaster, Senior Director of Customer Service Operations.

The petition argues that over 40 per cent of football players in the US are female which, combined with data from the ESA that 47 per cent of gamers are women, makes a strong argument for including female characters in FIFA games.

“By offering just men’s teams as playable options on FIFA we’re not only denying these girls a chance to relate to the characters they play on a video game, but we’re also wasting a great opportunity to encourage those same girls to be who they are, develop their passion, motivation and promote a healthy image and relation between women and sports,” explains the petition.

“Young girls can’t be portrayed by male video game characters. We want them to be able see themselves in the games they love, as the soccer players that inspire them.

“Don’t restrict our choices to Messi, Rooney, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo. Allow girls and boys to play with Wambach, Sawa, Morgan, Cristiane, Miyama, Rapinoe, Marta, Hope Solo, Mia Hamm, Birgit Prinz.”

The petition currently has 8,515 supporters.

FIFA 14 is expected to be released later this year.

Do you believe EA has a duty to include women’s football in FIFA games? Doing so would take time and money, so would you accept fewer other additions in new FIFA games to enable these new female characters to be added? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
