Far Cry 3 will feature an open world 10 times the scale of the previous game, according to the project’s lead narrative designer.

Ubisoft’s Jason Vandenberghe has told Edge magazine of the publisher’s desire to surpass previous games in the series.

“If you look at the vistas and the scale of Far Cry 1 and 2, take that and multiply it by 10,” he said. “We want to take that even further. We’re focusing on taking that scale and making it dense, so that around every corner there’s something to find or see. That’s a key in open-world experiences. We ask ourselves: if there wasn’t anyone to shoot in this game, could it still be fun?”

VandenBerghe added that he wants to present the player with difficult moral dilemmas.

“We’re not doing simple good versus evil choices. I don’t think it’s interesting. I want to present the player with intense situations and then I don’t even want to watch what you do. That’s not the designer’s business.”

From what we’ve seen so far – and you can read our Far Cry 3 preview here – the latest game will have a number of departures from the Africa-set Far Cry 2. However, VandenBerghe seems to have a fairly clear idea on the core ingredients of the franchise:

“Fundamentally, Far Cry has always been about someone who is doing one thing and then gets f*cked, and ends up having to be a hero. That’s what it should be about. That’s a great fantasy: what if I wasn’t surrounded by witnesses? Would I be a hero?”
