Team FOLON’s London expansion to Fallout 4 has garnered bucket-loads of attention over the past few years. Unfortunately, it’s been delayed several times due to issues out of the developers control; Starfield’s launch, shadow-dropping next-gen updates, and a ‘frustrating’ lack of communication from the game’s original developer Bethesda. It’s almost here, and the team has an internal release date decided upon. In the run-up to its eventual launch, whenever that’s expected to be, the project lead Dean Carter has illuminated on potential plans for a console launch.

In speaking with The Metro, Carter said that “what [Team FOLON] want is to speak to a decision-maker, because if we could make it a standalone thing with [Bethesda’s] permission, that means that people on gaming consoles could use it, which they currently can’t.”

Bethesda are one of the few studios out there who openly welcome modders and hackers into its creative teams. Starfield, Skyrim, and Fallout each have thriving modding communities that continue to keep those games alive despite their age – the latter two especially. In fact, Bethesda have been known to poach developers working on mod projects in the past. Dean Carter was offered a role at the Bethesda UK Branch working on Fallout 76, while former Lead Technical Advisor Ryan Johnson went on to assume a role as an Associate Level Designer.

It’s clear that Bethesda has some modicum of respect for mod developers, and with that in mind it’s entirely possible that they’d be open to conversation about a potential standalone build of the game that could be distributed on consoles.

One of the main concerns that’s likely prohibiting that is the distribution and publishing of the game. Could it just be released as a free expansion to Fallout 4, or would it be licensed as a whole new game entirely. Perhaps Bethesda could come to an agreement with Team FOLON to have it licensed and sold as a new game entirely?

Whatever the possibility of this happening, a console release would be an emphatic move. Unfortunately, I don’t have my hopes up at all. If packaging the game for Epic Games and Game Pass builds of the game was near impossible, then I suspect that Xbox and PlayStation will be equally difficult.
