The Fairy Tail RPG adaptation showed off new gameplay footage that includes a Jellal boss battle, a deeper look at the combat system, close-ups of character models, and the environments of Magnolia (via Nintendo Everything).

Every single spell in the game has been detailed in the new footage. Fairy Tail’s combat encounters take place on a six-by-six grid wherein the enemies and the party members cannot move from their spots. Magical attacks have varying ranges and the trick is to try and hit as many adversaries as possible from the character’s starting position. Even though they’re stuck in the mud, enemies will deal considerable damage to the heroes and developer Koei Tecmo has stressed a ‘highly strategic’ approach is the key to victory. In this snippet of gameplay, we got to see some Heavenly Body Magic in a boss battle facing Jellal.

Each character and enemy have their own strengths and vulnerabilities to the types of magic present in the game, and playable characters include Gajeel Redfox, Juvia Lockser, Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartfilia, Wendy Marvell, Gray Fullbuster, and Erza Scarlet. The combat looks impressive for a game that is approximately halfway through its development journey. And, Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima is a consultant on Gust and Koei Tecmo’s adaptation, so fans will be pleased to see the attention to detail is top notch. The new gameplay footage also explored Magnolia Town and it seems that players will be able to swap between playable characters on a whim.

Fairy Tail is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in 2020. Watch the new gameplay videos below (cheers, Nintendo Everything!).
