Gust’s Fairy Tail RPG adaptation shares a lot of similarities with its Atelier series, as revealed in a live gameplay session at EGX 2019 (via DualShockers).

The game is about halfway through its development journey and based on this snippet of gameplay, it’s in ship-shape so far. And, it’s adopting a lot of the features and mechanics that developer Gust has used in its Atelier series. For example, the arcs of Fairy Tail will be split into chapters and these chapters will then be separated into episodes. To rebuild the Guild in Magnolia Town, players will take on quests from the quest board. Mirajane is stationed here to divvy out the jobs to the playable character.

Out in the wilderness, players will harvest and collect materials to craft and upgrade magical abilities and equipment. Locations like Crocus will be selectable in a world map menu and if the player attacks enemies first and surprises them, the game gives you a ‘Chance’ in combat. As previously revealed, the playable party of five and the enemies they face have their own strengths and susceptibilities to magic types.

The enemies will be stationed somewhere on a three by three grid and will hold fast throughout the whole battle, quite conveniently. Each magic type has a certain range and using a ‘highly strategic’ mindset may allow players to hit multiple enemies in one turn. During combat, the characters’ ultimates will charge. Once fully charged up, the ultimates will let players chain their party’s abilities to obliterate all the enemies on the field at once. Players have a choice to continue chaining attacks or end the combo attack on a certain character’s unique finishing move. And of course, victory in battle levels up the characters stats and replenishes their MP.

All of this sounds very like Atelier, however with Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima taking a supervisory role in the game’s development, fans can be confident it will stand on its own two feet.

Fairy Tail is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in 2020. Watch the new gameplay below.
