Fairy Tail, a new RPG based on the manga series by Hiro Mashima, has received a new trailer introducing its characters, gameplay mechanics, and where the story will take place (via Gematsu).

During the ‘Fairy Tail Special Stage’ at Tokyo Game Show, developer Gust and publisher Koei Tecmo walked through what players will expect from the new game. Firstly, it was announced that there will be 10 playable characters. We knew that players could take on the roles of Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia, and Wendy Marvell, Gray Fullbuster, and Erza Scarlet will join them.

Fairy Tail will draw its narrative inspiration from the ‘middle arc’ of the original anime series, and the prologue begins with the Hades battle of the Tenrou Island arc. Then, the game resumes with the reconstruction efforts of the Guild as the story of the Grand Magic Games arc interlinks with the first narrative act. The game is essentially centred around the Guild and its restoration is a testament to the player’s momentum through the game.

Players will progress through the Guild, which will expand and develop as the story moves forward and the characters level up. Magnolia Town has been faithfully replicated in the game, and quests will be advertised on the Request Board. As the player becomes more powerful, the village stores will offer a greater range of items, and a research laboratory can be built as well. There will be a world map that links up Magnolia Town with the surrounding fields, and connect to several other visitable locations like Crocus.

As for the battle system, it mimics the style of Gust’s Atelier series. Combat will be turn-based, and both allies and enemies will use a characteristic formation when attacking. This will affect magic moves, in their attributes and their effectiveness, so players will need to adopt a ‘highly strategic’ mindset to ensure victory. MP reserves will be replenished upon eliminating an enemy, powering the next turn in battle. And, powerful, cooperative magic attacks are possible, but Koei Tecmo will release more information on that next month.

Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima is taking a supervisory role in the game’s development, which is said to be halfway there. He’ll be overseeing the character’s appearances and graphical representations, as well as the story content.

Fairy Tail is set to launch for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in 2020. Watch the character introduction trailer below.
