Microsoft has confirmed the launch of Fable III: Kingmaker, a geo-location mobile gaming experience which asks gamers to take part in a virtual land grab in the name of gold.

The free app – head to Fable3Kingmaker.com to get started – will enable players to state a claim to territory by tagging real world locations and planting a virtual flag using the GPS functionality on their smart phone.

The faction with the greatest number of flags in any given territory at any given time will “conquer” that land – changing it in colour and following to either the Rebels or the Royals. Players will be rewarded for their allegiance and efforts in capturing territory with in-game Gold which may be transferred into the full game of Fable III.

Peter Molyneux, creative director, Microsoft Games Studios Europe, commented: “To be able to earn gold you can use in your Fable III game, and to check-in and claim land for your side is brilliant for both Fable III and Xbox 360. We all love the innovation and feeling of being connected that Kingmaker brings to gamers.”

Kingmamker will launch October 4 for Android, October 6 for iPhone and this holiday – when the handsets arrive – for Windows Phone 7.

Fable III will be released for Xbox 360 on October 29. A PC version is also on the way at a later date.
