Fishing Planet will be coming to the PS4 on August 29, and the trailer has everyone’s attention. A kind of tongue-in-cheek, over the top action movie rip-off, but for fishing, it’s certainly proven that the right attitude can get a fishing simulator a lot of attention. But it is still a fishing simulator, people.

Fishing Planet is pretty bland looking online multiplayer, first-person fishing simulator, developed with the aim of providing players with a highly realistic angling experience. Attempts at realism aside, it’s not one of the best looking PS4 games that you’ll see this year. But there are some attempts to make the game visually appealing, with splashing water effects and so on to vary what’s generally quite an uneventful activity.

The game features 12 scenic fishing environments (or waterways), over 70 fish species, thousands of tackle combinations, and is supported by a ‘advanced’ fish AI system that will ensure players have the most fulfilling of experiences. Unfortunately Fishing Planet only seems to focus on the angling aspect of fishing, which concerns me as it is touted as the planetary fishing experience.

Perhaps a sequel could introduced the likes of trapping, netting, hand-gathering and spearing, so players can then engage in a fully expansive and in depth recreation of a intensely patient, yet highly-skilled pastime?

Fishing Planet originally released onto early access back in 2015 for PC. It’s out on PS4 on August 29, it has also been released on PC.
