Kingdoms of Amalur would not exist had it not been for EverQuest II’s failures, according to 38 Studios head Curt Schilling.

Speaking to CBS Sports Schilling explained the background of the studio, stating that the release of EverQuest II made him wonder “What were they thinking?” and spurred him to create his own start-up company.

Schilling funded 38 Studios mostly privately, with help from “high net-worth individuals” and a state grant from Rhode Island.

The studio currently has 400 employees. Their first title, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, is available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
