EVE Online’s widely dlsliked expansion, Incarna, was unpopular amongst users because it didn’t address player needs, according to CCP.
In an interview with PC Gamer, senior producer Arnar Hrafn Gylfason explained the expansion’s main fault was in not including any major gameplay.
“We didn’t really do any gameplay around it, it was just ‘here are some characters, you can walk around’ and that’s it. That’s all you can do, you can walk around inside a small room.
“Sure it’s a good step to being able to be a person and being able to see your person, but it’s a more important step for that person to be able to do something rather than just walk around. And I think that’s where we ultimately failed.”
Gylafson went on to explain the incentive behind Incarna was to help deal with the beginner experience that many felt was a barrier-to-entry in the game.
“Being a spaceship isn’t appealing to a lot of people. People want to be a person, someone they can identify with and get into character with.”
However, this introduced features “that the core community weren’t really excited for but had potential new markets.”
The Incarna expansion was the first update to allow users to walk through their ships.
The Crucible expansion, the latest update to EVE Online was designed specifically to address player issues and improve the general experience.
