Epic Games’ Samaritan tech demo, which debuted at GDC 2011, certainly caused a bit of a stir on the internet, but Gears of War executive producer Rod Fergusson has said it was a message for console manufacturers to “suck it up” and be ambitious with the next generation of consoles.

Speaking with VideoGamer.com, Fergusson reflected on what the stunning tech demo was supposed to accomplish. “The Samaritan demo was a call to arms for the manufacturers out there. It was to say this is where we think next gen gaming is going. This is what you can do today on PC’s: do you really want the consoles to be that far behind? If you’re saying the next-gen hardware potentially can’t even do what today’s PC’s can do… it was really meant to say [that console manufacturers] need to suck it up and be more grand with [their] plans.”

“We did it with the Xbox 360 and we’re trying to do it with whatever’s going to come next,” said Fergusson, referring to Microsoft’s decision to increase the memory of the Xbox 360 as a direct result of seeing what Epic could do with better hardware.

Does this mean Gears of War 3 is the last hurrah for the ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3, however? “Never say never,” said Fergusson, “it’s not my role to predict where we’re going to go with Unreal Engine 3.”
