Elixir Studios has announced that they are winding down operations and will be making all their staff redundant by the end of the week. Full redundancy packages will be paid to all employees and some staff may continue to work on a freelance basis. This news comes after a key title was cancelled.

I’m very proud of what all the staff at Elixir have achieved and the games we produced,” said Demis Hassabis, Elixir’s founder. “We gave it everything we had but ultimately it wasn’t quite enough. It seems that today’s games industry no longer has room for small independent developers wanting to work on innovative and original ideas. Perhaps there is no longer any need for them.”

Elixir was responsible for Republic and Evil Genius, two novel PC games that didn’t perform as well as expected. They had revealed plans for a possible Xbox version of Evil Genius, as well as a full PC sequel, and seemed upbeat about the future when we met them at the 2004 EGN, but their future is now very uncertain.
