Frontier has announced that the next major update for Elite Dangerous won't be released until 2020, but it'll be the biggest one yet for the game.

This doesn't mean we won't be getting anything until then, however. Frontier has promised a number of smaller updates will keep things ticking over until the latter of next year, when the major update is due for release.

As for the Big One, it'll be a paid expansion, and those of you who have a lifetime expansion pass will be able to snap it up right away when it drops. Beyond that, Frontier is keeping mum on any further details.

'As development progresses, we will share more news and announcements on features, as well as timelines regarding this upcoming content for Elite. We can understand that having a long wait for news can be frustrating, but we truly believe that this will be the single most impactful update for our community,' reads the post.

The developer is being a little more open about what to expect until then though. For starters, it's aiming to craf 'ongoing, engaging, and varied sets of content' by changing the way in-game events and activities will function.

Community Goals will be tweaked, says Frontier, with the aim of 'using them within a larger schedule of development-led events to help us create more improved, meaningful and engaging experiences.'

New updates will be released every three to four months, with the first two focussing on welcoming new players and quality of life improvements for Elite Dangerous. We're also promised a number of 'exciting new additions' prior to the launch of next year's major patch.
