Elite Dangerous has sold 1.4 million units across PC, Mac and Xbox One since making its debut in December 2014, Frontier has announced.

The figure accounts for actual units sold through to consumers, rather than the number of registered users or copies shipped.

The space sim’s achievement follows a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2013 where it raised over £1.5m, with the average play time of each user said to stand at 60 hours. A major new season of content titled ‘Horizons’ began rolling out last month, introducing the option for players to land on planets.

“We have an amazing player community,” said Frontier CEO David Braben. “The average play time among our 1.4 million players is 60 hours – that’s a massive 84 million player hours and counting.

“With the community’s feedback, we’re constantly making Elite Dangerous better than ever. We have incredible long-term ambition and we will continue to deliver on those ambitions. We will detail more exciting developments for Horizons very soon.”
