The sale of in-game items and characters is big business, and eBay is the primary location for much of this trade. Over the weekend it has been noticed that eBay has been clamping down on such listings, removing items from games such as World of Warcraft, EverQuest II and other MMOs.
The exception is Second Life, an online game in which players can literally live another life, complete with dealings involving real-world money. eBay spokesperson Hani Durzy explained the reason for the apparent double standards.
“If someone participates in Second Life and wants to sell something they own, we are not at this point proactively pulling those listings off the site,” Durzy told News.com. “We think there is an open question about whether Second Life should be regarded as a game.“
Durzy also estimates that eBay has been removing offending auctions for around a month. Sellers which do not abide by the revised policy will have offending items de-listed. Continued rule breaking will result in the closure of their account.
