Rock Band is an ambitious sounding title, offering four instruments to create your very own living room rock band. The latest issue of Game Informer magazine has spilled the first info on how they’ll work, both solo and as a band.

Apparently the game will feature four separate campaigns, one for each instrument: guitar, bass, drum and vocal. These can be played individually or in one go providing you have three other rockers to play with. You’ll each take an instrument and play the notes indicated on screen. The guitar will feature on the left of the screen, bass to the right, drums in the middle and lyrics for the vocalist will scroll across the top of the screen.

The lead guitar and bass will feature ten 10 buttons, five for regular play (meaning the Guitar Hero controllers will work), plus five more for special sections. There’ll also be a range of sound effects which players can introduce, including Flange, Wah, Chorus and Echo. The whammy bar will also be present as will a tilt activated “star power”.

Drummers will have four coloured pads and sticks with which to beat them, plus a foot pedal. Just like the guitar you’ll be able to add your own flair plus do well enough and “star power” can be activated.

Vocalists will be able to use a USB mic and unlike SingStar, Rock Band claims to be able to puck up individual vowels and consonants. Belt out enough correct sounds and you’ll enter free-form mode which in turn leads onto a vocal version of “star power”. When you’re not singing the mic will double as a tambourine so you don’t feel left out.

The game also promises full character customisation and online play, although exact details are still to be announced.

It’s also been confirmed that Weezer – Say It Ain’t So, Black Sabbath – Paranoid, The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again and Nirvana – In Bloom will feature. Expect plenty more to be announced over the coming months.

Rock Band is scheduled for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this holiday season.
