EA has ceased development of its next Steven Spielberg collaboration, Project LMNO.

Following up on comments made by industry veteran Jake Kazdal, EA confirmed the project’s status.

“EA maintains its relationship with Steven Spielberg,” said an EA spokesperson. “EA has ceased development of LMNO. EA continually monitors development resources and adjusts resources as appropriate. No new title announcements.”

Elaborating on what the game might have been, Kazdal said: “It was very ambitious. We had a small team – very smart people on it. And we spent a lot of time thinking and talking. And doing some stuff. And it just sort of … I don’t know exactly what was the thing that made it fall apart.”

And why was it canned? Kazdal says there “was some rival game stuff that may or may not have come out of EA that was basically the same thing minus some of the stuff” his game was doing.

Back in 2005 EA announced a partnership with Spielberg to create three new franchise properties, the first of which was the moderately successful Wii title Boom Blox. The game spawned a sequel, Bash Party, and last summer Spielberg hinted at a third game in the series. However, nothing new on the Boom Blox franchise has been heard since then. With the second project now cancelled, a large question mark hovers over the development of future EA/Spielberg projects.
