EA has announced plans to retire a trio of Playfish’s Facebook titles as the publisher continues “sharpening its focus to provide games for new platforms and mobile”.

SimCity Social, The Sims Social and Pet Society will all be taken offline on June 14, with the publisher citing a drop in player numbers as the reason for their retirement.

Despite the fall in numbers for Playfish’s range, however, EA states that it will continue to deliver “popular titles” for Facebook, including PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and Plants vs Zombies.

The games’ retirement follows last week’s news of lay-offs within EA.

Joystiq claims that around 60 to 70 permanent employees were made redundant last week, with a further 100 employees under contract reportedly let go.

It’s not known how many of those – if any – were at Playfish, or how the studio will be affected by the games’ retirement.

EA told Joystiq this afternoon that it “won’t be commenting on the status of Playfish.”
