In what is a huge step into the MMORPG market, EA has announced an agreement to acquire the Virginia-based development studio Mythic Entertainment. Mythic is best known for the Dark Age of Camelot games, but probably of more importance to EA is the studio’s license to make an MMORPG based on the Warhammer franchise – Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
The acquisition will see the studio renamed EA Mythic and will focus on producing MMORPGs. Whether or not the deal will give EA license to print money just as World of Warcraft has for Vivendi isn’t certain, but the publishing juggernaut will be hoping to gain a foothold in the MMORPG arena come fall 2007, when Warhammer Online finally hits retail.
The acquisition is expected to be finalised during EA’s second quarter of its 2007 fiscal year (July – September 2006).
