EA has today announced the development of Tiberium, a new game set in the Command & Conquer universe which blends first-person shooter and tactical squad combat.

Set on a devastated earth, Tiberium is a mysterious extraterrestrial crystal that has the power to save earth’s civilisation. It’s this new power source which stands at the centre of a battle against an alien force.

Players assume the role of Forward Battle Commander Ricardo Vega and must assemble an elite squad to combat the global crisis. You’ll be armed with an arsenal of weapons including a transforming personal weapon system, multi-launch homing missiles, capital ship bombardments and tactical ion cannon strikes.

The game promises to blend first-person shooter with tactical squad combat; players having to control multiple infantry, armour, and air squads as the fight escalates. This squad-based combat will also be the key to success in the online arena, full details on which are still to be announced.

The game’s been in development for two years at EA Los Angeles and is hoped to be the start of a new franchise. Look out for Tiberium on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in autumn 2008.
