EA CEO Andrew Wilson chatted to GameDaily.biz (via PCGamer) during E3 2019 about a host of different things, including the lacklustre launch of BioWare’s Anthem.
Wilson addressed the fact that Anthem ultimately didn’t appeal to the two different kinds of players that came at launch: those that wanted an epic Mass Effect or Dragon Age-style RPG, and those that wanted a loot shooter like Destiny.
‘About the 30 or 40 hour mark they really had to come together and start working in on the elder game. At that point everyone kind of went, “Oh, hang a minute.” Now the calculation is off.’
Some have been worried that EA will s***tcan BioWare, like the publisher has done with a number of its other beloved studios such as Dead Space’s Visceral. Wilson, however, says that EA will be backing BioWare, as he’s confident the team is going to make Anthem ‘something special and something great, because they’ve demonstrated that they can.’
‘BioWare has to evolve and has to expand and has to test the elasticity of that brand,’ he continued. ‘The teams at BioWare will continue to come to work every day and listen to their players old and new and seek to deliver on the promises they’ve made to those players. That’s what you’re seeing with Anthem today.’
In our review, Mike said that ‘Anthem is gorgeous to look at and can be fun in places, but for now it feels decidedly half-baked,’ and it feels like that hasn’t been fully addressed, yet, but at least it sounds like EA is going to be supporting BioWare as they look to sort it out for players that have stuck with it since March.
