Speaking to the Financial Times, EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello has revealed “Hollywood folks” are concerned that “Iron Man the movie is going to get killed by Grand Theft Auto the game”.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before,” said Riccitiello.
Riccitiello continued: “There is more interest today from Hollywood to make movies out of our games than there is interest in our industry to make games out of their movies. There’s a big reset happening now.”
The EA boss believes video games, in the eyes of many, are now viewed with equal importance as movies.
“Our industry is passing through a phase where I believe the greatest games will be viewed by almost everybody as being as important as Best Picture at the Academy Awards,” said Riccitiello.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen video games being compared side by side to movies. The hugely anticipated release of Halo 3 in 2007 registered the biggest entertainment launch in North American history, notching up sales of $170 million during its first 24 hours on sale in North America. This beat records held by the Spider-Man 3 motion picture and the novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
